OK, maybe not by us old fogies who know which side our CD is burned on, but my prediction is that the next generation will be editing MIXES of viral tunes created by real musicians instead of listening on streaming platforms.
The joy of AI music, for people who are not musicians, is the ability to create a sweet beat with only a few text prompts. Granted, if you put in a silly prompt, you get a silly song that nobody is interested in. But AI creates COVERS of tunes very easily.
When you’re using AI music generators, the more you know about music, the more closely you listen, and BETTER the AI covers are!
So my prediction is that “real musicians” will create bare-bones songs (STEMS) with viral hooks and clever lyrics – and then the kids will remix and cover these songs to their heart’s content using AI: “Hey, I’ve gotta play you my mix of ‘Two Broken Hearts,” he will say. “That’s Down Gonk,” she will reply, in the vernacular. “But I’m listening to Mike’s mixes right now.” Oooh. So Cut.
This custom-remixing will create MUSIC OWNERSHIP for this generation that is much stronger than ownership for mix-tape generation of the 80s.
All things being equal, I’ll give it 5 years.
